Dental implants are the latest and most comprehensive method for restoring teeth that have already been lost or are not treatable and need to be extracted. Essentially, they are metal substitutes for the missing roots, surgically placed into the jawbone, and serve as a foundation for artificial teeth – single crowns, bridges or even full dentures. The metal used is called titanium and has the rare property of gradually bonding with the bone, eventually becoming integrated with it over time.
The placement is performed under local anaesthesia and is painless. A healing period of a few months usually follows, to allow the implant(s) to fully integrate with the bone. After the integration is complete, the dentist can take the necessary impressions and proceed with the fabrication of the dental restoration. After a successful try-in the restoration is permanently placed in the mouth and the patient is instructed on how to use and maintain it.
