Sometimes, one or more teeth may be so badly damaged — due to decay or breakage — that a simple filling isn’t enough to restore them. In other cases, certain teeth need to serve as support for dental prosthetics, such as bridges or dentures. To prepare for these situations, the teeth may need to be shaped to receive special coverings known as crowns.
A crown is essentially a custom-made “cap” that fits over a tooth. Before placing a crown, the dentist gently reshapes the tooth under local anaesthesia to create enough space for the crown to fit properly. Then, impressions of the teeth and a bite registration are taken and sent to a dental lab where the crown is carefully crafted.
Once the crown is ready, it’s tested in the patient’s mouth to ensure it looks and functions well. If everything fits as it should, the crown is permanently bonded to the prepared tooth. It becomes a fixed part of your mouth — not removable — and can be used just like a natural tooth for chewing and daily activities.
A well-made crown closely resembles a natural tooth in both shape and colour. It’s usually made from high-quality porcelain fused to metal or a durable modern material called zirconia, which offers strength as well as a lifelike appearance.
