    When one or more teeth develop \u201cdecay\u201d due to the action of bacteria in dental plaque, part of the tooth is essentially dissolved by acids (technical term: dental caries<\/em>), resulting in the formation of a cavity. A similar situation can occur \u2013 without the element of decay \u2013 if a piece of a tooth breaks due to trauma. In such cases, the dentist can usually remove the decayed part \u2013 often under local anaesthesia \u2013 and then restore it by placing suitable materials, effectively “sealing” the cavity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    The most commonly used material today is composite resin, commonly known as a \u201cwhite filling.\u201d This way the filled tooth is restored both functionally and aesthetically, as the material used can be used for normal chewing, etc and closely matches the natural colour of the tooth.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
